Dorothy Pitts, 86, a long-time resident of Smoots Mill in Caroline County, VA went to be with God on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Pitts. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Bill Ruble; her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Harry Richardson and their three daughters, Jean Smith, Carol Link, and Betty Reppert; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rudy and Alice Pitts and their children Diane Healy, Rob Pitts, David Pitts, and Jonathan Pitts; Gary Pitts, son of the late George and Lucy Pitts; and many kind and caring neighbors. Dorothy graduated from Madison University and taught school in Alexandria and Caroline County. She was a life-long member of Salem Baptist Church and an avid gardener. She was a wife and friend to Clarence, a loving mother to Sue, a friend to many, and a great lover of nature and the farm she called home. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Salem Baptist Church, 24132 Sparta Road, Sparta, VA. 22552. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Edythe HeadEdythe A. Head, 93 of Ruther Glen VA, died Sunday November 16, 2008 at her home. Born in Pennsylvania, she was a 1936 graduate of the Oil City School of Nursing, in Pennsylvania and a 1958 graduate of the Boston School of Nursing, in Massachusetts. She had retired as Lt. Commander. in the United States Navy after a 24 year career. She served during WWII as a Navy nurse aboard the hospital ship USS Repose with the 7th Fleet in the Pacific. She was a life member of the Pennsylvania Nursing Association and the Military Officers Association of America. She was an active member of Ladysmith Baptist Church for over 30 years, serving as Missions Director and Sunday School teacher. Survivors include her sister, Betty Hall of Pennsylvania; three nieces, Deborah Boyer and her husband Dr. Walter Boyer, Susan Dahle and her husband Robert, all of Oil City PA and Lynda Bagnell and her husband Herbert of Pionesta PA; three nephews, Donald Hall and his wife Kathy of Pionesta PA, Robert Hall and his wife Ruth of Ambridge PA and Joseph Hall and his wife Marcy of Columbia SC; numerous great nieces and nephews and her special friend, Joan Stravinsky of Ruther Glen VA. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Merle and Wayne Hall and a niece, Laurie Hall. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 22nd at 11:00 AM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Burial, with Navy Honors, will be Tuesday November 25th at 11:00 AM in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle VA. Survivors include her sons, John Logan and his wife Anne and James Logan of Woodford; a sister, Harriette Apel of Pennsylvania; a brother, David Illar of Florida and a granddaughter, Julia Ann Logan. Theresa Parisek GabyTheresa Parisek Gaby, 91, of Fredericksburg died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in New York to Paul and Mary Michaliga Parisek, she was the widow of Stephen Gaby. She was a resident of Woodford for over 50 years and a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation.

Survivors include her daughters, Jean Martini and her husband, Perry and Joan Duvall and her husband, Mike; seven grandchildren, Bernadette Ricci, Stephen Collins, Carly Duvall, Christine Duvall, Elizabeth Duvall, Yolanda Martini and Elle Martini; and two great grandchildren, Zackerie Russel and Andrea Mitchell. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie Gaby.

A funeral mass will be held 10 AM Friday, November 14, 2008 at St. Mary of the Annunciation, Ladysmith. Burial will follow in St. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery, Woodford.

The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Hilda McBride Herrington, 91 of Ruther Glen died Wednesday October 29, 2008 at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh NC. Born in Swinton, England to David Albert and Mary Ann Seddon McBride, her family immigrated to Billerica, Massachusetts when she was four. Her father, an avid musician taught her at a young age to play piano. She graduated from Howe High School and Lowell Commercial College and moved to Washington DC to work for the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1938 – 1941. She married Weldon Herrington on July 5, 1941 and settled in Arlington to raise her family. After her husband’s retirement she moved in 1972 to Lake Caroline, where she was a member of Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church. In 2005, Hilda moved to Raleigh to be closer to her daughter’s family. Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Sargent and her husband, Keith of Salt Lake City and Linda Strube and her husband, David of Raleigh; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon; her son, Ronald and her brother, Alan McBride. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 3rd at 11:00 AM in Wright’s Chapel, with burial to follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Bowling Green. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Patricia Dayle Pitts Fortune, 60 of Sparta, suddenly passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Arthur & Julia Pitts and the widow of Todd B. Fortune, Sr. She is survived by her partner of 21 years, James Trainham; her two son,s Todd B. Fortune, Jr. and Rodney Derick Fortune; four grandchildren, Todd Phillip, Nicholas, Kassie and Joseph; one sister, Judy Lindsey; three nieces Ursula, Christine, and Cheryl, and two nephews, Shawn and Jamie and a host of other family. She was preceded in death by a sister Yvette Annette Pitts and a brother, Kevin Pitts. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Charles P. Thompson, 76 of Hartwood died Saturday October 25, 2008 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Arkansas, he had retired after 25 years with the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a member of Berea Baptist Church and a 30 year resident of Hartwood. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jimmie Dot; his son, Michael Thompson and his wife Marilyn of Fredericksburg; his daughter, Nancy Dolan of Alexandria; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Preston P. Satterwhite, 86, of Ruther Glen died at his home, Monday, October 27, 2008. Born in Caroline, he was the son of Maurice & Grace Satterwhite. He was the owner of Satterwhite’s Grocery in Ruther Glen for 29 years and later retired from Swift Oil Company. He was a World War II veteran in the U. S. Army and a member of County Line Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn P. Satterwhite; a daughter, Donna M. Satterwhite of Roanoke; two sons, James A. Satterwhite and his wife, Linda of Williamsburg and Larry P. Satterwhite and his wife, Donna of Sandston; a sister, Doris Jackson and her husband, Wesley; a brother, Rev. Howard Satterwhite and his wife, Agnes of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leland Satterwhite. She was the widow of Joseph Latka, a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church and had retired from the telephone company in Alexandria. Survivors include her brother, Charles E. Gatewood of Fredericksburg; her sister in law, Frances Gatewood of Bowling Green; her nephews, James Gatewood of Tappahannock, David Gatewood of Stafford and Douglas Gatewood of Smithfield NC and her niece, Helen Pemberton of Spotsylvania. Mr. John L. Mitchell, Sr., 86, died Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in Laurel, Md., Mr. Mitchell had first served in the U. S. Marine Corps. He later joined the U. S. Army having served during WWII and Korean War Conflict. He retired from the U. S. Army after 25 years. After his retirement he worked at the Tolley Cookie Factory and Mary Washington College in food services. He is survived by his wife, Arleta M. Mitchell; a son, John L. Mitchell, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Milford; two sisters, Dorothy Jenkins of Laurel, Md. and Ruth Polston, Whitehouse, Texas; a brother, Franklin P. Mitchell, of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Shelley Michalski of Richmond, and Shaun Mitchell of Gainesville; Mother of Shelley and Shaun, B.J. Mitchell of Mechanicsville, Va.; three great grandchildren, Jacob Lee Mitchell, Ragan Grace Michalski and Madison Faith Michalski; step-grandchildren Maria Milberger of Pueblo West, Colorado, and William Oard of Holcomb, Kansas.

Ivey A. Taylor Jr., 69 of Milford, died Friday October 10, 2008 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Danville, he retired as SFC E-7 with the United States Army. Following his retirement, he drove a fuel truck with E. M. Gray Oil Co. in Milford, for many years. Survivors include his wife, Diane J. Taylor; his mother, Frances Taylor of Danville; his son, James Taylor of Nevada; his daughter, Susan Taylor of Michigan; his sister, Linda Gibbs of Danville and seven grandchildren. THOMAS M. SALISBURY, III (AGE 62)

On Friday, September 26, 2008, of Ladysmith, Virginia. He served his Nation proudly, and was a Viet Nam Veteran. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he continued to serve his country as a Russian Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Army (Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence) until his retirement as a civilian employee in 1997.

Beloved son of the late CWO Thomas M. Salisbury and Mrs. Sadie L. Salisbury; brother of Mr. Charles C. Salisbury (Yvonne), Mr. William A. Salisbury, and Ms. Carol S. Hays (John); Uncle of Mr. Michael T. Stovall, Mr. David T. Salisbury (Nicole), Mr. Sterling M. Salisbury, Mr. Jonathan J. Salisbury, and Tracy L. Hays; and treasured friend of one cat, Skeeter, whom he loved dearly and brought him great joy during the tough times.

Mr. Salisbury was born on May 30, 1946, in Long Branch, New Jersey. He graduated from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, and also attended the Virginia Military Institute. He was a member of the Order of Indian Wars and a life member of the Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays. He received the Editor’s Choice Award in 1995 and 1996, by the National Library of Poetry. He had several professional articles published in the Military Review and the Aviation Digest. “I have found historical settings sometimes frame thoughts best and convey depth in feelings often lost in the din of the times we live.” TMS

Mr. Salisbury died from complications following a long illness that he faced with great strength, dignity, and courage. He remained strong in his faith and his trust in God. His inurnment, with military honors, will be Thursday October 30th at 9:00 AM at the Columbarium in Arlington National Cemetery.

Barbara D. Hylton, 69, of Bowling Green, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. Barbara was the daughter of the late Carroll and Ruth Daughtrey. She was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She taught math for a number of years and was the business manager for her husband’s dental practice. She was a member of St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the choir and former Senior Warden of the Vestry. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Richard D. Hylton; a daughter, Lisa Sinz and her husband, Dave of Hershey, PA; a son, Rick Hylton and his wife, Sarah of Gloucester; a sister, Jean Myers of Westminster, MD; two brothers, Tom Daughtrey of Sandston and Lyman Daughtrey of Greenville, NC; six grandchildren, Abby Hylton, Ben Hylton, Gibson Hylton, Claire Sinz, Caroline Sinz, and Kate Sinz. A funeral service will be held 10 AM Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church, 130 Main Street, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery. Richard L. Walton, 77 of Ruther Glen, formerly of Falls Church, died Wednesday September 24, 2008. He attended Washington State University and received his MBA from the University of Georgia and retired as an economist with the Dept. of Commerce in Washington DC. He was a lay leader for 38 years at the Falls Church Episcopal Church and most recently attended St. James The Less Episcopal Church in Ashland. Survivors include his wife, Sally B. Walton; a son, The Rev. Richard Walton Jr and his wife, The Rev. Margie R. Serrett, 85 of Rappahannock Academy died Friday September 19, 2008. She was a devoted mother, avid gardener and known as “Miss Margie” by her customers at Rozell’s Store in Woodford. William A. “Bill” Anderson, 71, of Ladysmith died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at his home. Born in Richmond, he had retired in 2000 as a vocational teacher at Hermitage Technical Center. He was a master marine and auto technician and he was awarded “Teacher of the year” while at Hermitage. In his younger years, he was a champion water skier and had recently begun his second term as Madison representative to the Caroline School Board. He was also a member of the Grace Community Church of Caroline.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Anderson; three children, Sharon Anderson of Richmond, Mary Lynn Anderson of Stafford and Bill Walker of Fauquier; a step daughter, Carol Sloper and her husband, John of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and step-son, Gene Mongole and his wife, Kimberly of Arnold, MD; a sister, Betty Phillips of Arkansas, a brother, Roy Anderson of Alexandria; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his dog, Suzie Q. He was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Linda Mongole.

A funeral service will be held 7 PM Friday, September 12 at the Caroline Community Service Center, 17202 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green with Rev. Cash Beveridge officiating. The family will receive friends, at the Center following the service.

Edwin Chenault, 63 of Ruther Glen died Saturday September 6, 2008 in Mary Washington Hospital. He was a member of Ladysmith Baptist Church, a 40 year employee of Pratt Industries in Ashland and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Patsy Lee “Pat” Blanton, 56, of Caroline County died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Fredericksburg, July 31, 1952, she was raised in her family home in Ruther Glen and a member of Concord Baptist Church. She was a 1970 graduate of Caroline High School and attended Ferrum College and Pan American Business School. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Blanton and her brother, Taylor Blanton. Pat was a loving daughter, sister and dedicated friend. She is survived by her mother and step-father, Betty and Aubrey Wade of Mechanicsville; a step-mother, Evelyn Blanton; a sister and her husband, Debbie and Buddy Thomas ; two nephews, Brad Thomas and Joel Blanton ;two nieces, Haley Kennedy and Katie Blanton; a great-nephew,Caleb Kennedy and four great-nieces, Kendall Thomas, Delaney Thomas, Hannah Kennedy and McKenzie Kennedy. Shirley Ann Stafford, 69 of Statesboro GA, formerly of Caroline, died Saturday August 30, 2008. Freddie Wilson Hall, 84, of Ladysmith passed away at his home on Monday, August 18, 2008. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 81st Fighter Squadron of the Army Air Force in northern France, landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day.

He was a member of County Line Baptist Church. He was a generous and kind man, always willing to give a helping hand to those in need, quietly doing various acts of charity that may have gone unknown. He also helped in the community in several ways. He was a member of the Ladysmith Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief for several years during the 1950s. He was also the owner of Hall’s Esso/Exxon of Ladysmith for over 35 years. Many young men in the area go their first job working for Mr. Hall.

He enjoyed country music and loved playing the guitar with his friends. He also enjoyed fishing at Lake Caroline, where he was one of the first property owners. He was married to Genny Hall for over sixty years, lovingly caring for her until her death in June 2007.

Survivors include his three children, Lorraine (Hall) Miller of Ladysmith, Thomas Wood Hall of Baltimore, MD and Denise (Hall) Wendle of Harrisburg, PA, five grandchildren, Shawn Kendall and Chad Kendall, both of Orlando, FL, Jason Wendle of Cambridge, MA, Ethan Wendle of Port Matilda, PA and Heather Crabtree of Ladysmith, as well as three great grandchildren, Jackson Kendall and Sophie Kendall of Orlando, FL and Jonah Wendle of Cambridge, MA. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel (Hall) Kulynych and Doris (Hall) Servais and a brother, “Bubba” Hall.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 11AM in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green with the Reverend Franklyn Carrington, of Manassas presiding. Davy “Lee” Hughes 67 of Spotsylvania, went home to be with his Lord and Savior and beloved wife Dorothy “Bev” Hughes on August 7, 2008. He was a member of Ladysmith Baptist Church and had served in the United States Marine Corp. Lee had retired after working and operating his own heating and air conditioning business in the local community for over 30 years. He was known best for his generous and giving heart, the love of the outdoors, animals and his family. Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Hughes Carroll of Spotsylvania; a son, Hunter Lee Hughes and his wife, Tammy of Spotsylvania; two grandsons, Timothy Blake Carroll of Spotsylvania and Austin Chase Hughes of Harpers Ferry WVA; two granddaughters, Dallas Lee Hughes and Lexi Lee-Ann Hughes of Ruther Glen; a step granddaughter, Skylar McMillion of Ruther Glen; a brother and sister in law, Dale and Betty Hughes of Pennsylvania; four sisters, Jean Wintamyer, Dot Saulisbury and Mae Brown of Pennsylvania and Rae NeSmith of Florida; a brother in law and sister in law, James and Kathy Lacey of Amissville and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by and infant daughter and his beloved wife of almost 40 years, Dorothy “Bev” Hughes. James Irving Bruce, 85 of Woodford, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Bruce was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and had retired after 40 years service from Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac railroad. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and gardening. Katherine Stephenson “Kay” Lennox, 80 of Richmond, formerly of Pittsburg, Pa. peacefully departed this life Saturday June 28, 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Lennox and her husband Kert Hook of Richmond; her son, Craig Stephen Lennox of Elverson, Pa. and her daughter, Kimberley Beatrice Gittman and her husband George of Ruther Glen, Va.; three grandchildren, John Casey Hook, Karl Stephen Lennox-Barbru and Katherine Elizabeth Gittman and her lifelong friend, Ruth Harbaugh of Oxnard, Ca. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Love Stephenson and Elizabeth Allen Stephenson and her sister, Betsy Smith. While Kay had many interests and friends throughout her life, nothing was more important to her than her children and grandchildren. Her family wishes to thank all her caregivers over the past 5 years in Richmond, especially her buddy LaShell Jefferson, who helped Kay and her family keep their perspective and sense of humor during her illness. Barbara Jean Herald, 81 of Rappahannock Academy VA, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008 in Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg VA. Barbara was born on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa, to Bessie and Ralph Hill. She studied nursing at the University of Michigan and was a compassionate care giver to many throughout her life. A Girl Scout leader and frequent volunteer, she was an avid reader and baker; bu,t her abiding passion in life was her family. She was a devoted mother and loving wife and is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Herald; a brother, James Hill of Waco TX; a daughter, Patricia Dayton of Baltimore; a son, Michael Herald of Lakeville MN and four grandchildren, John Kelly, Ella, Anthony and Tyler. Hill, he retired after 28 years at FMC and then worked at Fort A. P. Hill. He was a U. S. Army veteran and a member of County Line Baptist Church. Otis Junior Samuel, 57 of Milford, went to be with the Lord Friday May 30, 2008. He was the son of the late Otis Samuel Sr. and worked for many years for Caroline County Public Schools. He enjoyed repairing automobiles in his spare time. Survivors include his two daughters, Betty Ann Fortune and her husband Jimmy of Woodford and Amy Ernest and her husband David of Ruther Glen; his mother, Laria Pitts of Milford; two sisters, Thelma Carneal and her husband Frank of Ruther Glen and Joyce Carter and her husband Julian of Bowling Green; one brother, Donald Samuel and his wife Nita of Woodford; two grandsons, Michael and Justin Fortune of Woodford. He shared a special bond with his mother’s husband Edward Pitts, affectionately known as “Grandpa”. Glenn Lee Samples, 71 of Ladysmith, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at his home. He was a devoted husband and father and had retired after a long and distinguished 26 year career with the government. The last 24 years were spent at U.S. Customs where he rose to the position of Chief, Data Base Branch. Mr. Samples was also a teacher, counselor, and NASA mathematician during his early professional career. Survivors include his wife, Frances Samples; his mother, Chessie E. Brown of Waynesburg, Ohio; one brother, Richard W. Samples of Rising Sun, Maryland; one sister, Sandra Lynn Raymond of Waynesburg, Ohio; three daughters, Beverly Diana White of Edmunds, Washington; Tammy Lynn Hanson of Alpharetta, Georgia and Melissa Renee Kern of Woodbridge, Virginia; three step-children, Gary A. Rozell of Woodford, Virginia; Roger Rozell of Austin, Texas and Sandra Rozell of Woodford, Virginia; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John Vincent Samples and a brother, Ronald Gene Samples. Mr. Samples was very active in the church and involved in community events. He was much beloved and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends 6-9 PM Friday, May 30, 2008 at Storke Funeral Home. Emma E. “Cassie” Gayle, 83 of Ruther Glen, died Wednesday May 21, 2008 at her home. She was the widow of Julian W. Gayle and a member of Carmel Baptist Church in Ruther Glen. She was the Valedictorian of her 1943 graduating class at C. T. Smith High School in Ladysmith and during WWII she worked in the torpedo factory in Alexandria. Survivors include four children, Wayne Gayle and Dennis Gayle both of Richmond, David Gayle and his wife Susan and Joyce Duncan and her husband Mike all of Ruther Glen; three sisters, Irene Swisher of Ashland, Earlene Perry of Partlow and Pearl Davis of Newport News; four brothers, Clyde Carneal of Colonial Beach, Eugene Carneal of Spotsylvania, Ryland Carneal of Fredericksburg and Berkley Carneal of Woodford; five grandchildren, Amy Doss and her husband Phil, Andrew Coghill and his wife Ellen, Shannon, Derek and Andrea Gayle; two great grandchildren, Austin Doss and Haleigh Coghill. Stanley Ray Limbrick, 75, of Bowling Green went home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. He was affectionately known to those dearest to him as “Ray Ray”. He waged a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Though “Ray Ray” lost the battle, he has victory. Mr. Limbrick was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He spent many years in the Industrial Engineering field while at FMC and General Products. Following his engineering career, Mr. Limbrick spent 35 years as a retail merchant in Bowling Green.

Mr. Limbrick was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Josephine Morris Limbrick and his special brother, Reggie.

Survivors include his wife, best friend and business partner, Ruth Limbrick; seven children, Gary Limbrick and his wife, Cathy of Stafford, Jerry Limbrick of Spotsylvania, Debra Morgan and her husband, Keith of Spotsylvania, Penny Chenault and her husband, David of Bowling Green, Mark Gaines of Bowling Green, Karen Doane and her husband, Butch of Williamsburg, Kathy Britt and her husband, Richard of Bowling Green; an “adopted” daughter, Betty Ann Fortune and her husband, Jimmy of Woodford; fourteen grandchildren, Kimberly DeBernard, John Gaines, Kristy Morgan, Eric Chenault, David Gaines, Katie Morgan, Jamie Limbrick, Ashley Doane, Danielle Canavan, Steven Chenault, Matthew Limbrick, Alicia Britt, Tyler Limbrick, and Tyler Doane; two “adopted” grandchildren, Michael and Justin Fortune; four great-grandchildren, Ryland, Taylor and Kameron DeBernard and Michael Brown.

Patricia Kathleen (Kathy) Philip of Kathy Phillips departed this life May 12, 2008. Kathy was born February 11, 1953 in Richmond, VA. Her beloved sons, Wesley Mallory of Mechanicsville and Ashley Mallory of Bowling Green, survive her as does her cherished infant grandson, Nolan Mallory, and her loving daughter-in-law, Tracey Mallory. Kathy’s mother, Kathleen Dolan Philip of Mechanicsville; her twin sister, Debra Mitchell of Baltimore, Md; and her brother, Patrick Philip of Mechanicsville also survive her. Kathy is also survived by her niece, Margo Mitchell, her brother-in-law, Tom Mitchell, and dear friend, J. D. Rountree. Loving aunts, uncles, and cousins in Virginia, Ohio, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maryland also survive her. Her father, William (Bill) Philip predeceased her February 29, 2008. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 am, Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, Virginia, followed by burial at Signal Hill Cemetery, Route 301, Hanover, Virginia. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 15, 6 to 8 pm at the Church of the Redeemer. As a career nurse and hospice volunteer, she eased the pain of the thousands for whom she cared. She was admired for her artistic flair, endless creativity, and quick wit. Beverly L. Gage, 53 of Woodford, died Sunday May 4, 2008 at her home. She was the widow of Donald Gage and had been active in Fire and Rescue for the last 15 years as an EMT and dispatcher. Mr. Lewis Walter Barlow, Jr, 84, of Ruther Glen, died at his home Monday, April 28, 2008. Born in Caroline County, he was member of Concord Baptist Church for 70 years where he had served as Sunday School director, teacher and deacon. He was a charter member of Reedy Church Ruritan Club and Frog Level Volunteer Fire Department. He was a World War II Army veteran and had retired from Blakemore Construction. Dorothy C. Spayd, 88, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2008. Born in Sparta, VA, “Dottie” was the daughter of the late James Sample Brooks and Florence Pitts Brooks. Raised in Caroline County, she always considered Virginia “home”. She was a graduate of Lee Maury High School. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Dottie also enjoyed playing cards, reading, writing, family genealogy, word finds and bingo. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved the color red. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Herbert A. Spayd; as well as her children, Jack A. Spayd, Richard Spayd, George H. Spayd and Betty Ann Spayd; three sisters, Bessie, James Marion (Buie) and Flossie. Survivors include her loving grandchildren, Lisa M. Spayd and Samuel A. Spayd; her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Donovan and Sydney as well as several nieces and nephews, which include Joan Burkhart, Barbara Rizzi, Mae Miller, James Brace and John Sullivan. Alvin W. Frinks, 95 of Alexandria, died Wednesday April 2, 2008. Mr. Frinks had retired after many years as the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Alexandria. He was a member of the Alexandria Washington Lodge #22 AF & AM, was a 32 Degree Mason and Shriner. He was a lifelong member of Washington Street United Methodist Church and an avid gardener. He was also the widow of Marguerite James Frinks and after her death made his residence with his nephew in Caroline County. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Junnia E. Carter, 62, of Ruther Glen died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at VCU Medical Center. He was a member of County Line Baptist Church, and an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Shirley M. Frank Junior Revels, 83, of Ladysmith, died Monday, March 24, 2008 at his home. Born in South Carolina he was a wonderful husband, father, and provider. He had a special love for children and will be missed. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran having served in Korea. William G. Altman, 72, of King George, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at his home. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he was a past president of the King George Ruritan Club and a member of Gideons International. He was a 50 year Mason and a Deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church. William was a hardworking man who was known for his love of faith, fellowship, and outdoor activities like fishing and camping. Survivors include his wife, Betsy C. Altman; four children, Mary A. Thorsted and her husband Greg of King George, Kathy L. Altman and her partner William D. Synan of King George, William A. Altman and his wife Denise of Mechanicsville, and Gerald J. Lula M. Pugh, 93, of Beaverdam, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital. She was the widow of William Cleveland Pugh. She is survived by three daughters, Alice Anderson and her husband, Irvin of Beaverdam, Charlotte Hover of Beaverdam, Estelle Cecil and her husband, Mack of Mechanicsville; two sons, Arthur Pugh of Midlothian and Bubba Pugh and his wife, Delona of Beaverdam. She was a devoted grandmother of 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Doris Quinn and Barbara Durrett and three sons, Joe, Robert, and Milton Pugh. Yvonne Reedal Yvonne Newton Reedal, 39, of Port Royal, died March 7, 2008 at home after a long battle with cancer.

Yvonne was born April 18, 1968, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. She graduated from Caroline High School 1992.

Yvonne was a very community minded and loving person. Since she was 15, she volunteered her time to many fire and rescue organizations and rose through the ranks with the Port Royal Volunteer Fire Department to captain and life member. She worked as a 911 Dispatcher for Caroline County since 1993.

She married Mike in April 1994 and had a beautiful son in January 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Mike and son, Kyle; her father Ronnie “Nubby” Newton Sr. and his wife Kathy of Stafford County; her step-father Buck Caldwell of Port Royal; a sister Rhonda Parrish and her husband Scotty and their three sons Bradley, Christopher and Cody of Henderson, NC; three brothers, Ronnie Newton Jr. his wife Kathy and their two sons Dylan and Ryan of Ladysmith; Dana Newton, his friend Kaci and Baby Collin of Stafford and Justin Newton of Stafford; her maternal grandmother, Margie Serrett of Woodford; paternal grandparents, George and Ruby Newton of Stafford; three step-brothers, Chris Caldwell of Florida, Patrick Caldwell of Kentucky, and Jason Carter of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her son, Jonathon Newton and her mother, Betty S. Caldwell.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Bowling Green Baptist Church with Rev. Willis Dempsey officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 Pm Monday, March 10, 2008 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Michael Eugene Beazley, 43, of Bowling Green, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2008. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Ruth Beazley and a sister, Tina Beazley. He is survived by a sister, Linda “Cookie” Whittaker of Bowling Green; a niece, Aimee Floyd of Bowling Green; his aunt and uncle Margaret and Alfred Beazley of Milford and numerous cousins. Donald Edward Gage. Sr., 60, of Bowling Green died Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Born in Oklahoma, he is survived by his wife, Beverly L. Gage; six children, Jeannie Gage of Maine, Donald E. Gage, Jr. of Maine, Peggy Gage of Bowling Green, Kathryn Gage of Hampton, Dona Gage of Bowling Green and Jayme Gage of Bowling Green; a brother, Dale Gage of Missouri, and five grandchildren. Mr. Gage will be cremated and a visitation will be held 6-9 p. m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Bernice S. Jordan, 81 of Chilesburg died Monday February 25, 2008 at her home. Born in Caroline, she was a lifelong member of County Line Baptist Church and had retired after a 30 year banking career at SunTrust in Beaverdam. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, E. C. “Johnny” Jordan; three sons, Ronnie Jordan and his wife Jeanne of Bowling Green, Kevin Jordan and his wife Paige of Bowlng Green and Greg Jordan and his wife Laurie of Mechanicsville and eight grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 28th, at 2:00 PM in County Line Baptist Church, Ruther Glen, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church, Thursday from 12:30 until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to County Line Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

It is with a broken heart that I announce the passing of my lover and my best friend, Fred T. Lisbon, who died Thursday February 21, 2008 in Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. Survivors include his companion of 24 years, Barry Carlson of Ladysmith; his son, Jim Lisbon and his wife Penny of Highland Springs; two sisters, Antoinette Profilio of Richmond and Anne Rae Bateman of Mechanicsville; a grandson, Brandon Lisbon; a niece and nephew, Sandra Gabriel and Anthony Profilio; a brother in law, Sam Martin and close friend and caregiver, Ethel Wilson. Violet Pauline Vanover, 73, of Milford died Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. Born in Clintwood, she had retired from the FBI Academy at Quantico. Survivors include her husband of almost 60 years, Lee; five daughters, Norma Reiter of Fredericksburg, Sharon Cave of Mason Neck, Sandra Jarrells of Fredericksburg, Myra Schenemann of Milford, and Patricia Kahley of Ladysmith; three sisters, Eunice Crabtree, Shelby Conley and Reba Beverly; twelve grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. A funeral service will be 11 Am Saturday, February 23, 2008 held in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Friday, February 22, 2008 at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Feed the Children, or American Cancer Society.

Thomas B. Yancey 72 Thomas Yancey of King George died Friday February 15, 2008 in Mary Washington Hospital. He was born on Gayton Farm in Henrico Co. VA. Gayton was a farm over the veins of Gayton Coal Mine which ceased operations in early 1900's.

He moved to King George County with his family in Jan. 1941. He retired, after 34 years of Government service from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, Dahlgren, VA., with many commendations and awards. Prior to which he served from Aug 26, 1956 to Jul 5, 1960 with the US Air Force in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) with service both stateside and overseas. Since his retirement, he enjoyed research, writing, and the great outdoors. After about two years of research, he printed his research on his of the Yancey Family line entitled "Some Notes on Alexander Yancey and Mary Ann Elam and Green O'Berry and Elvira Parker", his great grandparents. Then after more research, approx. two more years, he printed in 1996 "Some Early Masons and Masonic Lodges in King George County, VA". He has had articles printed in The Free Lance Star, The Journal, and The Virginia Masonic Herald.

He was Past Master of Colonial Beach Masonic Lodge #199, in 1968, and Charter Past Master of Hudson-Morris Masonic Lodge #80, in King George, in 1980-81. He was Past District Deputy Grand Master of District #8, in 1985 and he was Past Patron and member of Wakefield Chapter No. 77, OES in Colonial Beach, VA.

He holds membership in Acca Temple, in Richmond; past member of the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies; Royal Arch Chapter, No. 41 in Kinsale; Heritage Shrine Club in King George; Colonial Beach Masonic Lodge No. 199 in Colonial Beach; Hudson-Morris Masonic Lodge No. 80 in King George; Wakefield Chapter No. 77, OES; Lord Culpeper Council No. 152, Allied Masonic Degrees (AMD) and has been Secretary of Hudson-Morris Lodge since 1982. He has been Secretary/Treasurer of Jesse Jefferson Johnson Area Masonic School since Oct. 1998. He was a member of the King George County Historical Society and has presented some of his works to them. He served on the Educational Planning Committee for King George Co. in 1965. The Committee aided in the design of the Proposed New High School on Dahlgren Rd. around the needs of the County. This Committee, a small group of county residents, was chaired by Leon Rosenberg.

He served his county again, on the Board of Zoning Appeals from May 31, 1989 until Sept. 30, 1995. He then served his County on the North Central Regional Drug Task Force as Grand Juror before Jul 3, 1993 thru 1997. He also served on the Highway Safety Commission of King George Co. He was a life-long member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he was baptized Aug 8, 1947. He was elected Deacon on Dec. 4, 1963 and has served as Chairman many times. He has served as chairman on many committees in the Church and Sunday School and was Sunday School Director from 1967 though 1969. Beginning in 1988 and ending in 2005 he was the teacher of the Men's Adult Class and was made a Trustee of the Church in 1999.

In Boy Scout Troop 191 Tom has served as Committeeman for Publicity since 2002.
